Yangon, Myanmar, 1-2 June 2017

A total of thirty participants (16 women) attended the National Meeting of the Swedish-supported Programme “Towards a Non-toxic Southeast Asia” held from 1-2 June in Yangon, Myanmar. The participants represented national government, private sector and civil society organization (CSO) partners and regional implementation partners, including, FAO, CSO partners (The Field Alliance and Pesticide Action Network-Asia Pacific) and the Swedish Chemicals Agency (KemI). The meeting was organized to inform a larger audience about the regional programme, its goals, activities and results to date, with a focus on ongoing/planned and collaborative work in Myanmar for reducing pesticide and chemical risks. Opportunities for joint work in pilot convergence areas in Myanmar were explored for the remaining Programme Phase 2 years (2017-2018). A detailed report on the workshop will be prepared and posted on the programme website soon.

Prior to the national meeting, the regional partners and the Swedish Embassy in Bangkok carried out a field visit to project sites and activities in Southern Shan State implemented by the local partner CSO Myanmar Institute of Integrated Development (MIID) and private sector Myanmar Fruit, Flower and Vegetable Producers and Exporters Association (MFVP). Dialogue was held with the Director and staff of the regional agriculture department to solicit ideas to design collaborative government-CSO-private sector work on IPM/pesticide risk reduction in Southern Shan State under the Sida-supported programme.
